The Landscape & Challenges:
While the volcanic earth offers an abundance of agricultural fertility, the community faces a severe and daily paradox of extreme water scarcity. The village lacks immediate access to reliable local water infrastructure for daily life and agricultural processing. To keep their exceptional coffee crops alive, passionate farmers must regularly trek across kilometers of difficult terrain to manually haul water back from distant lakes and hidden mountain waterfalls.
Location & Access:
Located in the Sanxay District of Attapeu Province, Ban Dak Padou is a remote highland community situated 40 kilometers deep into the mountains from the neighboring Dak Cheung District. Due to the challenging, rugged mountain terrain, navigating this distance requires a slow and grueling 1-hour journey, highlighting the village's profound geographic isolation.
Community & Livelihood:
The village is home to 388 residents (including 191 women) living across 71 closely-knit households. Life here is defined by resourcefulness and a strong spirit of self-reliance; beyond farming, the community is highly skilled in blacksmithing—forging their own essential knives and tools to sell locally and to neighboring communities—as well as practicing traditional bamboo and rattan basketry.
